Caribana Reflections

Toronto’s Caribana is the world’s largest Caribbean-themed celebration. Due to the spread of COVID-19, earlier this year Caribana was cancelled for the first time in 52 years. Although it will now be taking place in a very limited capacity, given the current political climate and the progress of Black Lives Matter, the lack of a full-blown celebration in the streets is a huge loss for Toronto and Canadian-Caribbean culture.

To mark the importance of Caribana to the community, True North Photo Journal is publishing Samuel Engelking’s photos of the festival, which he has shot in the past few years. Engelking is a Toronto-based editorial & portrait photographer who works for Now Magazine. He will also be taking over our Instagram account for the next few weeks. Enjoy!
